When was cheese invented?

Did you know that cheese was made long before recorded history began? It is one of our oldest ‘manufactured’ foods.

No-one knows exactly who started making cheese first but it started at the time when sheep were first domesticated. In Egyptian tombs, murals show the making of cheese.

There are thousands of different cheese types. The British Cheese Board, for example, say that there are over seven hundred in the tiny British Isles alone. It’s estimated that both France and Italy have over four hundred varieties. A French proverb says that they have a diferent cheese for every day of the year.

You might think that the French are the greatest cheese consumers. That’s what I thought, but no. They are the largest exporters of cheese but only rank second to Greece when it comes to being the largest cheese-eating country.
